Tom Latham's 11th Test century was the highlight on day one of the second Test against England at Seddon Park.

The BLACKCAPS fought through a tough first hour on the first morning to go to lunch at 86/2.

Scorecard

Following the interval, Tom Latham and Ross Taylor accelerated through the second session with Taylor bringing up his 32nd Test half century.

The back end of the session belonged to Latham who brought up his 11th Test century in the last over before tea.

He was joined by Henry Nicholls and the pair saw the score through to 173/3 before rain halted play on day one.

Video Highlights

Hamilton locals BJ Watling and Daryl Mitchell combined for a 124-run stand for the sixth wicket to ensure the BLACKCAPS posted a strong first innings total in the second Test against England at Seddon Park.

Scorecard

Mitchell (73) and Watling (55) blunted the English attack, before accelerating after lunch to take the score past 300 before Watling fell on the stroke of tea.

Mitchell and the lower order combined for some valuable late runs as the BLACKCAPS posted 375 in their first innings.

Tim Southee and Matt Henry then took a wicket apiece to give the home side the upper hand heading into day three on Sunday.

Root & Burns lead English fightback

Rory Burns (101) and Joe Root (114*) lead the fightback for England on day three at Seddon Park, the pair putting on 177 runs for the third wicket to keep their side in the contest.

Scorecard

Burns and Root batted for almost half of day three to set up an enthralling back end to the second Test, Burns reaching the century mark before getting run out from a slick piece of work from Jeet Raval coming off the square leg boundary.

Root continued, and brought up his century after the tea break, narrowly missing his stumps while chopping down on a Neil Wagner delivery.

Rain brought a premature end to the day, but not before Tim Southee picked up the valuable wicket of Ben Stokes, and Wagner dismissed debutant Zak Crawley.

The morning session of day four will be pivotal to the direction of this Test match, Root resuming on 114* along with Ollie Pope on 4*.

Wagner bag five as Root goes big

The BLACKCAPS have finished day four 96/2 with Kane Williamson (37*) and Ross Taylor (31*) at the crease, trailing England by just five runs ahead of the fifth and final day tomorrow.

Earlier, England's captain Joe Root (226) piled on the runs in the morning session of day four, he along with Ollie Pope (75) ensuring their side took a 101-run first innings lead.

Scorecard

Root became the first visiting captain to score a double century in New Zealand while Pope's 75 was his Test best and maiden Test half century.

The BLACKCAPS bowlers toiled hard on a flat surface, Neil Wagner eventually breaking the 193-run stand between Root and Pope before cleaning up the England lower order to finish with 5-124, his ninth five-wicket bag in Test cricket.

When it was the home side's turn to bat, they lost Jeet Raval LBW to Sam Curran, and despite replays showing Raval had hit the ball, he hadn't reviewed it. Tom Latham also fell early in the BLACKCAPS second innings, before Williamson and Taylor steadied things to get their team to stumps.

The BLACKCAPS have completed a 1-0 Test series win over England after the second Test ended in a draw at Seddon Park.

Kane Williamson (104*) and Ross Taylor (105*) both notched Test centuries swiftly after lunch on day five of the second Test before rain took hold for the afternoon.

Scorecard

Captain Williamson was first to reach the milestone, his 21st Test century, and further cementing his spot at the top of New Zealand's century making charts.

Taylor scored his century soon after as dark clouds started to circle Seddon Park. Taylor took just two shots to rocket through the 90's, hitting consecutive sixes off Joe Root to reach the milestone.

Once Root's over was finished, heavy rain started to fall at the ground and the covers came on, the players not returning to the field again.ย
