India has taken an early 1-0 lead in the Netmeds ODI Series with a convincing eight wicket win in game one at McLean Park.
The impressive display started from opening stages of the match with Mohammad Shami on target early to pick up Martin Guptill and Colin Munro both bowled. Shami would finish Player of the Match with figures of 3-19 in a performance that set the platform for his side.
After the early loss of Guptill and Munro, India continued to apply pressure and test the New Zealand batsmen.
The visitors were able to squeeze and put pressure on the scoring rate early, continuing to take wickets just as the home side tried to claw things back.
All but one of the Indian bowlers went at less than five runs an over with spinners Chahal, Yadav and Jadhav all challenging the New Zealand batsman.
Chahal's twin caught and bowled dismissals to see the end of Ross Taylor and Tom Latham in particular putting a big dent in hopes of a BLACKCAPS batting fightback.
Dhawan and Sharma arrived in the middle chasing 158 to win the first ODI and started the pursuit off with care in the short period of play before the dinner interval.
The break was fruitful for the BLACKCAPS with Doug Bracewell forcing a prod from Sharma outside off in the first over back with the ball flying to Martin Guptill at first slip.
A further break in play was forced shortly after the wicket with sun-strike at one end of the ground meaning play was paused until shadow crossed the pitch.Β
Dhawan and Kohli then went about the chase in positive fashion moving the strike and picking off boundaries. Kohli was looking to push on before he was given out LBW to Southee, however on review he was ruled to have edged the delivery before it hit his pad.Β
He wouldn't last much longer though as he went on shortly after to edge one through to Latham off Ferguson looking to pull.
From there Dhawan led the way to finish on 75* while his new partner in the middle Rayudu was able to hit the winning runs.
