Kyle Jamieson's dream debut season for the BLACKCAPS continued in Christchurch on Saturday as he claimed a maiden five-wicket bag to help dismiss India for 242 on the opening day of the second Test.

Kane Williamson once again won an important toss and had no hesitation inserting India on a spicy looking Hagley Oval pitch with a heavy green tinge.

With Neil Wagner joining the Xl at the expense of spinner Ajaz Patel, the pressure was on the Kiwi seamers to deliver in what seemed bowler friendly conditions.

Indian opener Prithvi Shaw came out swinging with a brisk half-century, but he fell just before lunch as the first session ended on even terms at 85-2 with wickets to Trent Boult and Jamieson, the latter including a brilliant one hand catch by Tom Latham at second slip.

Tim Southee struck two major blows after the break removing Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane with some superb swing bowling, but Cheteshwar Pujara's 25th Test half-century ensured the visitors stayed in the contest reaching tea at 194-5.

After the break Jamieson made the big breakthrough, his extra bounce proving too much for Pujara's attempted pull-shot.

From there Jamieson would remove Pant, Yadav and Jadeja in 12 balls to secure his first five wicket bag and ensure the BLACKCAPS first day honour.

India dominated the first session claiming 5-79 and were only stymied by a gritty half-century to opener Tom Latham.

Star rookie Kyle Jamieson continued his superb match by belting 49 runs in quick time to bail the BLACKCAPS out from 177-8 to end the innings at 235 and just seven runs in arrears with a session remaining.

Trent Boult set the tone for the bowling display and had the ball swinging at speed as he removed Mayank Agarwal in his first over.

Tim Southee then got Prithvi Shaw with the short ball, Colin de Grandhome nipped one back to trap Virat Kohli LBW and Neil Wagner bounced out Ajinkya Rahane as the Test veered back towards the host.

Boult returned for one final spell and delivered arguably the ball of the summer - a violently late-swerving delivery that defeated the usually precise defenses of Cheteshwar Pujara.

The left-armer would then cleaned up nightwatchman Umesh Yadav in the last over of day two as India limped to stumps at 90-6 and a lead of just 97 with four wickets remaining.
