Nicholls century nudges BLACKCAPS ahead

Henry Nicholls's sixth Test century and third at the Basin Reserve helped the BLACKCAPS navigate a fiesty opening day of the second Gillette Test in Wellington.

The gritty left-hander walked to the wicket at 78-3 and proceeded to combine for three-straight 50+ run partnerships with Will Young (43), BJ Watling (30) and Daryl Mitchell (42), as the hosts fought their way back on a typically challenging Basin pitch.

Scorecard

Nicholls' unbeaten 117 has the BLACKCAPS well placed at 294-6 heading into the second day and he'll have Kyle Jamieson with him on 1*.

Earlier, West Indies captain Jason Holder won the toss and had no hestitation in electing to bowl, a decision which repeaded early rewards with the big wickets of Latham and Taylor in the first session

BLACKCAPS well on top after two days at the Basin

The BLACKCAPS are in a dominant position after two days of the second Gillette Test against the West Indies, led by Henry Nicholls' highest Test score and another five-wicket bag by Kyle Jamieson.

SCORECARD

Resuming on 117, Nicholls picked up where he left off on day one and accelerated the scoring as the visitor's attack began to tire.

He found good support from Neil Wagner who smashed eight fours and four sixes in a swahsbuckling 66* off 42 balls as the BLACKCAPS finished their first innings on a grand 460.

Tim Southee struck early in the reply, but it was Jamieson who blew the innings open in an explosive 15th over which saw him go within centremetes of a hat-trick.

The West Indies would limp to stumps at 124-8 with an uphill fight ahead to avoid a heavy defeat.

Bowlers push BLACKCAPS to brink of victory

The BLACKCAPS require four more wickets to claim an empahtic victory by an innings over the West Indies in the second Gillette Test at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, after another dominant day by their four-pronged pace-attack.

Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee became just the third New Zealand pair to claim five wickets each in an inningsΒ as the Windies first innings closed on 131 half an hour into the fourth day.

SCORECARD

With the follow-on enforced, it was Trent Boult who picked up the mantle for the BLACKCAPS bowlers, with the left-armer claiming the three big wickets of Kraigg Brathwaite (24), Darren Bravo (4) and Jermaine Blackwood (20).

Some late resistene from Jason Holder (60*) and Josh Da Silva (25*) along with bad light meant the West Indies lived to fight another day, although they still require 85 more runs to make the BLACKCAPS bat again.

BLACKCAPS on top of the world

The BLACKCAPS have gone to the top of the ICC Test rankings after completing a dominant 2-0 series win over the West Indies.

The result was sealed before lunch on day four of the second Test, as Tim Southee and Neil Wagner cleaned up the remaining wickets to resign the visitors to a heavy defeat by an innings and 12 runs.

SCORECARD

Henry Nicholls was named ANZ Player of the Match for his career-best 174 and Kyle Jamieson was declared ANZ Player of the Series for his 11 wickets across the two Tests.

The BLACKCAPS next assignment is a two-Test clash against Pakistan at Bay Oval on Boxing Day and Hagley Oval on January 3.

Should they win both those matches they would put themselves right in the frame to qualify for the ICC World Test Championship at Lord's next June/July.
