Otago Volts beat Canterbury by 5 wickets

Defending Ford Trophy champion Canterbury has had its first taste of defeat in 2021/22 after southern rivals the Otago Volts took a five-wicket win in Dunedin this evening.
Chasing Canterbury's 222 - a total that had been rocket-boosted by a wagging Canterbury lower order, the Volts cruised home with 7.1 overs to spare.
Allrounder Josh Finnie finished unbeaten on 72*, just one run short of his List A one-day career best score. Finnie had shared a 95-run stand with veteran Neil Broom for the fourth wicket, Broom (50) also posting a half century.
Earlier, the Volts' attack had had Canterbury's top batsmen in trouble after they were sent in, the visitors reduced to 90/6 in just the 22nd over.
But a fighting rearguard stand of 96 between Henry Shipley (a career-best 55) and Theo van Woerkom (41) set a new seventh-wicket record between these two sides.
Aggressive Volts paceman Matt Bacon had got his team the first breakthrough, and he came back to pocket three wickets at the death for a career-best List A haul of 4-45.
The next scheduled match sees the Central Stags begin their one-day campaign away to Northern Districts in Hamilton this Wednesday - with Adam Milne in tow.
