Northern Knights dominate Wellington Firebirds

The Northern Knights welcomed international import, Tilakaratne Dilshan, to their ranks with a dominant victory over the Wellington Firebirds in a round six HRV Cup clash at Mt Maunganui today.

Fresh off an international flight and a helicopter transfer, Dilshan added little by way of runs, but his teammates took care of the business with a crushing victory over the Firebirds.

Having decided to bat, the Firebirds tallied an insufficient 119 off their 20 overs, with a cluster of starts from Shah, Bell and Frenklin, but nothing of real substance around which to build a meaningful score.

The Firebirds firepower was choked by Daniel Vettori (2-19) and Tim Southee (2-17) who ensured that runs were not only difficult to come by - but dangerous to secure.

Chasing in the second inngs, the Knights dismissed the target in just 16.3 overs, with contributions from Peter McGlashan (43 runs off 38 balls) and the versatile and ever-present Vettori, with 39 off 32 balls.

The win keeps the Knights within distance of the HRV Cup leaders, the Stags and Volts, and with plenty to play for in Sunday's clash with the Canterbury Wizards in Hamilton on Sunday.
