In the closest of the round two one-dayers, Wellington chased down a 250 target to go two from two for an early lead at Nationals.

The capital's cricketers had been asked to field by Otago skipper Jacob Cumming who helped set up a good platform for his side with an innings of 57 off 47 balls, including three sixes and five boundaries.

Cumming was the third wicket to fall at 107 for three, however, the innings hanging in the balance as Wellington began to make regular breakthrough thereafter.

Ethan Goddard had picked up two early wickets and came back for 3-34 off just 8.5 overs, meanwhile Otago's Jed Mockford produced a valuable unbeaten 52* at six to ensure his side reached a defendable total.

Kevin Weerasundera also made an impact with the ball, claiming 3-37 off his 10 with Otago finishing at 249 for nine in the 48th over after Seb Kyle had had to retire.

Wellington lost both openers early in response, but first drop Sam Morgan (71 off 79) and number four Ethan Jefferson (85 off 102) steadied the ship with a solid 127-run stand for the third wicket.

Toby Hart (3-27) and Finn Hurley (3-60) kept the pressure on for ND, picking up three wickets apiece as they got Wellington down to its last two wickets, but Wellington got home with almost three overs to spare.
