The Indian Women’s cricket team has drawn first blood in their three match ODI series against the WHITE FERNS, claiming a nine wicket victory at McLean Park, Napier.
After winning the toss and bowling first, India were able to bowl the home side out for 192 in an innings that never really got going for the WHITE FERNS.
There was promise with the bat, Sophie Devine (28) and Suzie Bates (36) put on 61 for the first wicket, while captain Amy Satterthwaite (31) and Amelia Kerr (28) both made starts.
However, the visiting spinners proved hard to handle on a slowing McLean Park wicket, Ekta Bisht (3-32) and Poonam Yadav (3-42) taking three wickets each.
Some late blows from Hannah Rowe down the order gave the WHITE FERNS something to bowl at the halfway point.
Unfortunately for the home side, India’s openers Smriti Mandhana (105) and Jemimah Rodrigues (81*) were in sublime form.
The pair looked untroubled at the crease and settled into their work after a couple of close LBW shouts to Lea Tahuhu early on.
Mandhana and Rodrigues all but took India to victory themselves, the former falling with just three runs required for victory.
India Women lead the three-match ODI series 1-0 with the next match at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Tuesday 29 January.
