Weather clears for day one of ANZ Junior Cup

Round One

Raroa Normal Intermediate 116-7 (O Bennett 31, S Thurlow 25, J Gilkison 2-14, H Lithgow 2-23) lost to Waihi School 117-5 off 17.4 overs (H Lithgow 37*, E Burgess 34, S Malik 4-26), Manawaroa #6
Waihi School started well in their first appearance at the ANZ Junior Cup tournament in 10 years, chasing down a solid total of 116 posted by Raroa Normal Intermediate. Oliver Bennett led the way for Raroa with 31  and Sam Thurlow made an important 25 runs. Waihi School’s opener Eddie Burgess made a great start in reply with 34 runs, before Harry Lithgow closed out the game with an unbeaten 37. Raroa bowler Saad Malik claimed the impressive figures of 4 wickets for 26 runs, but it wasn’t quite enough with Waihi comfortably coming through to win the match with two and a half overs remaining.

Hereworth School 151-1 (J Ryniker-Doull 79*, A Scott 59*) beat Queenstown Primary School 33 all out off 10.2 overs (L Clarke 15, A Wakefield 2-1, Z Taylor 2-4, A Absolom 2-9), Manawaroa #4
Hereworth School made light work of Queenstown Primary School in their opening match after posting an impressive 151 for 1 from their 20 overs, thanks mainly to Angus Scott and first drop James Ryniker-Doull who had a stunning partnership worth 149 runs. Opener Liam Clarke topped scored for Queenstown in reply with 15 runs, but the rest of the Queenstown order struggled in their first game. Hereworth Schools’ bowlers enjoyed the overcast conditions with Andrew Wakefiled taking 2 for 1, Zach Taylor taking 2 for 4 and Archie Absolom 2-9.

Saint Kentigern Boys’ School 180-5 (M Alpe 98*, H Mcleod 32, L Panapa-Birch 2-32, J Hay 2-37) beat Marian Catholic School 122-7 off 20.0 overs (J Botherway 71*, J Hay 18, W Barclay 3-7, H Waite 3-23), Manawaroa #7
Saint Kentigern Boys’ School made an early statement in the ANZ Junior Cup by posting a formidable total of 180 for 5 against Marian Catholic School. Captain Marco Alpe was the star of the show with a polished 98 off 60 balls, while Leyton Panapa-Birch and Jackson Hay both took two wickets for Marian. In reply the Hamilton school could only muster 122 in their 20 overs with a standout contribution by Jackson Botherway who was unbeaten on 71 at the end of the innings. William Barclay (3-7) and Harry Waite (2-23) stood out with the ball for Saint Kentigern Boy’s School and ensured Marian fell well short of their target.

Round Two

Queenstown Primary School 23-8 (N Redden 6, J Benefield 3-4) lost to Marian Catholic School 24-0 after 3.4 overs), Manawaroa park #6
Marian Catholic School claimed their first win of the ANZ Junior Cup on the after of day one. They had opening bowler Jay Benefield to thank as he claimed the stunning figures of 3-4, never letting Queenstown get into their stride. Jackson Hay and Blake Hennessy made quick work of their target of 24 knocking off the runs in 3.4 overs A game that was played in great spirit continued with the teams playing an additional friendly to ensure their skills were sharpened for day two.

Raroa 83-8 (O Bennett 19, H Waite 6-10) lost to Saint Kentigern School for Boys 85-5 off 17.5 overs (H McLeoud 19, O Davies 17, F Allan 16, S Malik 4-18), Manawaroa Park #7
Despite Raroa Intermediate’s best efforts, nothing could slow down the Saint Kentigern side who comfortably won their second match of day one thanks principally to Harry Waite's incredible haul of 6-10. Raroa were still able to put 83 on the board thanks again to opener Oliver Bennett (19) who received help from Saad Malik and Sam Hunter both scoring 16. Harry McLeoud 19, Ollie Davies 17 and Fergus Allan 16 were influential in Saint Kent's chase and ultimately in their success. Saad Malik, once again starrred with the ball taking 4-18 to take his wicket tally to eight for the tournament.

Hereworth School 113-4 (J Ryniker-Doull 47*, C Wenley 25) beat Waihi School 78 all out off 18.5 overs (J Gilkison 17, J Wilson 2-15), Manawaroa Park #4
Hereworth School joined St Kent's as the only other unbeaten side after two rounds, by dowing Waihi by 35 runs in the final game of the day. The win was set up by a solid total of 113-4, with top run-scorer and captain James Ryniker-Doull scoring 47 off 36 balls, while Charles Wenley struck 25 off 21 balls at the end. Waihi struggled early finding themselves 26-1 at drinks. Some middle order fight from Jacob Gilkison 17 looked to revive Waihi’s innings but they weren’t able to make up for their slow start and eventually were dismissed for 78 with seven balls remaining.
