Raroa Normal Intermediate 78 all out off 19.4 (M Buckley 27, Z Benson 22, A Wakefield 3-23) lost to Hereworth 82-7 after 14.4 overs (A Scott 31, S Frame 2-14, C Kemp 2-15), Manawaroa Park #7
Raroa Normal Intermediate came up just short in the third round of the ANZ Junior Cup after posting a modest total. Raroa put 78 on the board thanks to Max Buckley top scoring with 26 runs and opener Zach Benson adding 22. Andrew Wakefield was impressive with the ball ending the game with figures of 3-23. Hereworth’s opener Angus Scott continued his outstanding form with the bat, scoring 31 off 23 balls, hitting 5 boundaries. Sam Frame’s 2-14 and Connor Kemp’s 2-15 tested Hereworth’s batting depth. In an exciting finish with 6 needed with the final pair at the crease, the well-drilled Hereworth side nailed the victory with Jack Wilson hitting a boundary taking his side to 82-7.
Waihi School 156-2 (J Gilkison 83*, H Peck 47*) beat Marian Catholic School 115 all out off 17.5 overs (L Panapa-Birch 26, J Botherway 24, D Grant 2-23), Manawaroa Park #4
Waihi School showed Marian Catholic School exactly why they deserved to be at the ANZ Junior Cup by posting an impressive 156-2 in their third match of the tournament. The Marian fielding side knocked over the Waihi openers only to welcome a ruthless partnership between captain Jacob Gilkison 83* and Hamish Peck 47* combining for an excellent stand of 136. The counter-attack from Marian opener Jackson Botherway (24) was cut short while the middle batting order fell away. Leyton Panapa-Birch's 26 hoped to push up the total, but with a tidy spell from Dougal Grant (2-23) saw Marian dismissed for 115 and well short of the 156 target.
Saint Kentigern Boy’s School 121-5 (O Davies 64*, S Wijerathna 3-14) beat Queenstown Primary School 45 all out off 13.5 overs (A O’Neill 27, H Waite 3-10, W Barclay 2-4, S Openshaw 2-9), Manawaroa #6
Sinath Wijerathna from Queenstown Primary School was influential taking 3 wickets for 14 runs in an effort to challenge one of the highly ranked sides. Despite their new found energy after their previous two losses, nothing could slow down Saint Kent’s opener Ollie Davies from delivering an innings of 64* to guide his side through to 121-5 at the close of their innings. In reply Queenstown opener and captain Angus O’Neill compiled 27, but it was not enough as Harry Waite (3-10), William Barclay (2-4) and Sam Openshaw (2-9) shut down the other end, with Queenstown evetnually bowled out for 45 in the 14th over.
Round Four
Marian Catholic School 106-3 (B Hennessy 35*, J Benefield 32*, J Wilson 2-13) lost to Hereworth School 108/3 out after 16.5 overs (A Scott 36, J Ryniker-Doull 21, B Hennessy 2-13), Manawaroa Park #6
Hereworth School continued their unbeaten run at the ANZ Junior Cup. In Round Four on the afternoon of day two they chased down Marian Catholic School’s first innings total of 106 with a well measured run-chase. Marian batted first with captain Blake Hennessy 35* and Jay Benefield 32* pushing for a competitive total to put pressure on Hereworth. Tight bowling from Jack Wilson with 2-13 expelled any chance of the big target Marian were seeking. Strong performances from Angus Scott (36) and James Ryniker-Doull (21) helped make lihght work of the run chase for Hereworth, reaching the target just three down in 16.5 overs. Marian’s Blake Hennessy produced a tight spell of 2-13, but it wasn’t enough. Hereworth head into the final round of play as one of two unbeaten teams.
Raroa Normal Intermediate 166 (M Buckley 75, S Malik 36, B Wijerathna 3-26) beat Queenstown Primary School all out for 67 off 11.5 overs (H Walker-Leach 26, S Thurlow 4-7), Manawaroa Park #
Raroa Normal Intermediate put 166 on the board thanks to Max Buckley’s top-score of 75 and Saad Malik's 36 off 31 balls. Special mention has to go to Queenstowns Wijerathna brothers with the eldest Binath Wijerathna collecting figures of 3-26, including a ripper catch taken by younger brother Sinath. Harry Walker-Leach'd 26 with the bat helped Queenstown to their highest score of the tournament to date, despite Sam Thurlow's 4 wickets for 7 runs for Raroa. Contrasting fortunes for the side's but plenty of good spirit and commraderie was still on display.
Waihi School 127-6 (J Gilkison 44, H Lithgow 43*, H Waite 3-34) lost to Saint Kentigern Boy’s School 128-1 off 16.1 overs (M Alpe 68*, O Davies 36, H McLeoud 20), Manawaroa Park #4
Saint Kentigern Boy’s School continued their winning streak after limiting Waihi School to 127-6 in their fourth match of the ANZ Junior Cup tournament. Jacob Gilkison's 44 and Harry Lithgow's 43* was the base of the Waihi total, while St Kent's bowler Harry Waite continuing his strong performances with 3-34. The Auckland school's captain Marco Alpe ensured a stress-free chase with another high scoring innings (68*), hitting 9 boundaries, with opener Ollie Davies adding 36 for his team. Harry McLeoud 20* assisted the strong Saint Kentigern side to achieve the target with just one wicket lost and 4 fours over to spare. Tomorrow's final round will see the Saint Kentigern side face fellow undefeated team Hereworth School to decide the trophy.
