There were two standout performances in Heaton’s 138-7 and they were 35* off 32 balls from Emily Dickey and she was well supported by Ciara Hartland who retired on 22. In reply Tawa never managed to build meaningful partnerships and with regular wickets falling, Heaton’s score always looked out of reach. Tawa were dismissed in the 8th over with 38 runs on the scoreboard. Leading wicket taker for Heaton was Lily Young who secured the economical figures of 3-10.

Round Three

Tawa Intermediate 92 all out off 15 overs (L Campbell 36, E Bolland 4-12) lost to Remuera Intermediate 93-5 (C McGuire 56*, A Birmingham 3-20), Manawaroa Park #6

After a great start to the day in the morning rounds, Remuera were looking to continue their winning ways. Tawa, after some extra throw downs during lunch were keen to start positively and choose to bat first in the hopes of putting the pressure on the Remuera side. Despite opener Lily Campbell starting the team off strongly, putting 36 runs on the table off 28 balls, nothing could slow down Remuera Bowler Elise Bowland from securing 4 wickets. Another tidy few wickets from the rest of the bowling side left Tawa with a under par total of 92 all out after 15 overs. The Remuera girls took the challenge on with determination as Christelle McGuire scoring her second half century of the tournament finishing on a handy 56*. In an effort to keep her team in the game, Tawa’s captain Anya Birmingham took 3 wickets, but it wasn’t enough as Remuera comfortably secured the victory in 14.4 overs.

St Matthews Collegiate 106-6 (F Wells 27, A Narang 2-6) beat Tauranga Intermediate School 71 all out off 14.4 overs (I Bartlett 2-9), Manawaroa Park #4

In the afternoon game on Manawaroa #4, St Matthews were looking for their first victory with their opponent Tauranga unbeaten up to this point. Tauranga hoping to continue their fine fielding and ability to take wickets early on, left St Matts to bat first. Francesca Wells put on an excellent display of what it means to be at the National finals, posting 27, later in the batting order. Ahaana Narang was influential with the ball, taking two wickets with only 9 runs conceeded. The crowd erupted as the St Matts side posted their highest score yet with 106 runs on the board. After the change in innings, St Matts knew they needed tight bowling to restrict Tauranga and that’s what they delivered. All four bowlers returned economical figures and Captain India Bartlett backed up her previous performances with two wickets. Tauranga really felt the pressure after none of their top order managed to get 10 or more runs, Bartlett lead the Wairarapa team to victory, when the final batter was stumped leaving Tauranga all out for 71.

Balmacewen Intermediate 54 all out off 8 overs (C Hartland 4-11) lost to Heaton Intermediate 58-4 off 7.2 overs (C Hand 2-5), Manawaroa Park #7

It was a battle of the two South Island teams on Manawaroa #7 this afternoon. Heaton and Balmacewen, both seasoned teams at the ANZ Junior Shield, had travelled from the South Island to stake their claim for the title. Balmacewen won the toss and decided to bat going against the tide of the other two games of the round. It may have been the wrong decision too as the early loss of Balmacewen’s top order, meant Heaton were quickly placing pressure on their lower order. Heaton’s Ciara Heartland, continued her consistent bowling, after knocking off three wickets for 11 runs and having Balmacewen’s final batter stump. Balmacewen was discussed for 54. The confident Heaton side managed their innings well and comfortably achieved the target inside of 8 overs. There was excellent bowling across the Balmacewen team, but the best return was from Caitlin Hand with excellent figures of 2-5, unfortunately this wasn’t quite enough to slow the 2019 champions from reaching the required total with 12 overs to spare.
