With just one day to go in the 2013 Gillette Cup Championship, Christchurch Boys’ High School are in the box seat after breaking Lindisfarne College’s winning streak at the NZC High Performance Centre in Lincoln.
In other games, Mt Albert Grammar beat Scots College and Otago Boys’ High School won against Whangarei College.
All three games saw the side winning the toss opting to bat first, hoping to take advantage of the fresh pitch and consistent bounce.
Scots College v Mt Albert Grammar
Scots College won the toss and chose to bat on the Bert Sutcliffe Oval. It was a slow start for Scots College, losing the first two wickets with only eight runs on the board.
Captain Josh Lawrence was the best of the batsmen reaching 79. Lawrence is also one of the best bowlers at the tournament, having taking nine wickets so far.
Tight fielding from Mt Albert Grammar and fine bowling from both Captain Aditya Dhadwal and Jared Donnell ripped through the Scots College batsmen, leading them to being 151 all out in the 42nd over.
Scots College’s Josh Lawrence followed up his good batting with some great bowling, taking two wickets, with four maidens off his 10 overs. However it was not enough - Mt Albert Grammar making quick work of the chase, reaching the target in the 37th over with seven wickets to spare.
Christchurch Boys’ High School v Lindisfarne College
In the big match for the day, undefeated and debut Gillette Cup Finalists Lindisfarne College took on Christchurch Boys’ High School, who had given dominant performances in their previous two matches.
The Canterbury side won the toss and opted to bat first. Daniel Stanley had another great spell at the crease, scoring 84 runs. Stanley scored 116 on Tuesday against Scots College and now has an impressive average of 57 in the tournament. Ruaridh MacKenie was the other standout batsmen scoring 87 off 92 balls.
Stray bowling proved to be costly for Lindisfarne College, with their bowlers clocking up 23 wides throughout the innings. Christchurch Boys’ High School eventually reached 250 off 50 overs.
Christchurch Boys’ High School was as punishing with the ball as they were with the bat, never allowing the Lindisfarne College batsmen to gain momentum. Alex Hooper was the star bowler, adding five wickets to his tally and becoming an equal leading wicket taken at the tournament. The final wicket came in the 46th over, with Lindisfarne falling 122 runs short.
Christchurch Boys’ High School will be looking to add to its tally of six Gillette Cup triumphs tomorrow when it takes on Otago Boys’ High School in its final match.
“Hopefully we can go back to back and put seven titles for Christchurch Boys’ High beside the Gillette Cup Trophy” says Captain Jeremy Benton.
Otago Boys’ High School v Whangarei Boys’ High School
Opting to bat first, Otago Boys’ High School opening batsmen put in a solid performance with a 106 run partnership. Will Kindley scored 63 and Dylan Buttar-Scurr was run out on 50.
Nick Stobart impressed with the ball, with three maidens ain his 10 overs. Stobart made 62 in yesterday’s match against the formidable Christchurch Boys’ High School.
Otago Boys’ High School would have liked to put a few more runs on the board. “We would have hoped to be three from three right now, given the performance in the field but our batting just hasn't done it for us” said bowler Luke Le Brun between innings. The batsmen finished their innings with a respectable 219 for six.
Whangarei Boys’ High School put up a gallant chase, eventually falling just 11 runs short. Otago Boys’ High School’s Le Brun took four wickets and Whangarei Boys’ High School’s Sam Clotworthy scored 74 with the bat.
