Like Day 1 of the tournament, Day 2 was played in ideal conditions with excellent pitches and outfields beneath cloudless, sunny skies. Again some high scores were posted but supreme amongst them was David Wakefield the Christchurch Boys’ High School captain who scored an unbeaten 115, equalling the tournament record, and guiding his team to their second victory. Not to be up staged by the batsmen Marcus Frost [Otago Boys’ High School] and Mark Chapman [King’s College] each bowled impressively to capture bags of five wickets.
POOL A:
King’s College v Francis Douglas Memorial College
King’s College: 233/7 (Luke Williamson 52, Mark Chapman 41, Dylan Jakicevich 59no, Sam Fastier 3-38) beat FrancisDouglas Memorial College: 100 (Gerald-John Pike 35, Mark Chapman 5-11)
King’s won the toss and had no hesitation in batting. A quality third wicket stand between Luke Williamson and Mark Chapman set the foundation, which Dylan Jakicevich capitalised on later in the innings with an accomplished 59 not out. This saw King’s post their second successive score of over 200 in reaching 233/7. Sam Fastier was the best of the Francis Douglas bowlers taking 3 wickets for 38 runs.. Francis Douglas never troubled King’s substantial total and apart from a steady 35 from Gerald-John Pike they were dismissed in the 29th over for 100. Chief destroyer was Mark Chapman, who had a fine double, with the impressive figures of 5-11 giving his team a victory by 133 runs.
St Peter’s School v Otago Boys’ High School
St Peter’s School: 153 (Douglas Bradley 47, Edie Walker 38, Sam Pulis 29, Marcus Frost 5-21, Josh Renton 4-28) lost toOtago BHS: 157/7 (Tom Griffin 67, Sam Ellis 25, Sam Pulis 2-12, Jason Thomasen 2-15)
This was a closely fought contest with Otago BHS winning the toss and putting St Peter’s in to bat. It looked like this was not the best option when St Peters were 81/1 due to a fine second partnership between opener Douglas Bradley (47) and Eddie Walker (38). However, after they were dismissed, only Sam Pulis showed any resistance with 29, and they were all out in the 38th over for 153. Outstanding bowling figures were recorded by left-arm opening bowler Marcus Frost 5-21 and medium pacer Josh Renton 4-28. Otago BHS’s response was held together by a resolute 67 from opener Tom Griffin, and with some help from Sam Ellis with 25, they saw their side through to victory seven down. Sam Pulis and Jason Thomasen both had very economical spells for St Peter’s off their eight overs and took two wickets each but still lost by 3 wickets.

Hamilton Boys’ High School v Hutt International Boys’ School
Hutt International Boys’ School: 196/6 (Mark McIIvride 31, Brett Johnson 20, Tim Brown 41*, Olly MacIntryre 27) beatHamilton BHS: 166 (Ben Calvert 20, Mitchell East 21, Matthew Lowe 46, Brett Johnson 4-34, Olly MacIntyre 2-24)
Hamilton BHS won the toss and put Hutt International into bat. Although they lost an early wicket a series of solid partnerships saw them post a very respectable 196/6 after their 40 overs. Very good contributions came from opener Mark McIIvride (31), Brett Johnson (20), Tim Brown (41*) and Olly MacIntryre (27). Hamilton BHS made a sound start courtesy of Ben Calvert and Mitchell East, but then faded, before Matthew Lowe batting at nine came in and put Hutt International under a little pressure with a belligerent 46. However, it was not enough and Hutt International emerged as winners by 30 runs. Olly MacIntrye and captain Brett Johnson both completed good doubles with two and four wickets respectively.
Lindisfarne College v Christchurch Boys’ High School
Lindisfarne College: 163 (Michael D’Esposito 35, Angus Smith 24, Jack Arnall 25, Tom Gore 2-35, Toby Jeffery 2-23, David Wakefield 2-23) lost toChristchurch BHS: 164/1 (David Wakefield 115*, Tim Braid 38*)
Christchurch BHS won the toss and opted to bowl first. Lindisfarne got away to a breezy start with captain Michael D’Esposito and Angus Smith putting on 69 for the first wicket. Unfortunately this could not be built on and only a late burst by Jack Arnall got them up to 163 in the 39th over. There were three run outs and the other wickets were shared for Christchurch BHS between Tom Gore, Toby Jeffery and captain David Wakefield. Then it was the turn of David Wakefield to put on an impressive batting display to record an unbeaten 115 not out, only the third century in the history of the tournament. He shared in partnerships of 68 with Henry Reece and 96 unbroken with Tim Braid to see his team home in the 30th over just one down. An outstanding batting effort giving his team a 9 wicket win.
Day 1 - Match reports and scorecards
The first round of the finals tournament of the New Zealand Community Trust Junior Boys’ cricket competition got underway in cool, but sunny conditions at Owen Delany Park in Taupo today. All the teams winning the toss asked their opponents to bat. For Otago Boys’ High School and Lindisfarne College that proved the right decision but for St Peter’s School and Hutt International Boys’ School both their opponents relished the pitches and each tallied over 200. Star performer of the day was Harry Nash for King’s College who not only scored an accomplished half century, but then took 6/21 the second best bowling figures in the tournament’s history.This is the sixth year of this competition for year 9 and 10 students. From the original 148 school entries the competition has narrowed down to this finals tournament which comprises eight teams – the winning schools from each major cricket association together with the runners-up of the two associations with the largest number of entries.
The teams are divided into two pools of four teams. Over the first three days the teams play round robin matches in their pools. The teams are then ranked in their pools before playing crossover matches on day four to determine the champion team for 2008/09. Matches are of 40 overs duration.

Match 1: King’s College v St Peter’s School

King’s were asked to bat first and after the loss of an early wicket they made the most of the very good batting conditions to post an impressive 246/5 off their 40 overs. Three of their batsmen notched half centuries – Cameron Gibbons, Mark Chapman and Harry Nash – while Sam Klippel was not out 24 at the end of the innings. Faced with such a formidable total St Peter’s lost three early wickets but then steadied their innings through the efforts of Tim Siefert 56 and Sam Pulis 30 to post 152/9 after their 40 overs. Chief destroyers for King’s were their opening pair of Harry Nash and Kim Kingstone. Nash’s six wickets is one of only three six wicket bags captured since the inception of the tournament in 2004. The final result was a convincing win to King’s by 94 runs

Otago BHS won the toss and decided to bowl. A very good decision given that Francis Douglas MC were quickly reduced to 4/14, then 6/36, before a seventh wicket stand of 34 between Sam Hitchcock and Michael Blanks saw them limp through to 106 in the 33rd over. The wickets for Otago BHS were shared between Jack Hunter, Marcus Frost and Hamish McMillan who each took two wickets. In reply Otago BHS made short work of chasing this total bringing up the winning runs in the 20th over for the loss of just two wickets. Sam Ellis, Josh Renton and Tom Griffin all made useful contributions.

Match 1: Hamilton Boys’ High School v Lindisfarne College

Hamilton BHS were asked to bat by Lindisfarne who won the toss. Hamilton was soon in trouble and struggled through to 7/50, before Elliot Santner and Toa Davis combined in an eighth wicket partnership which saw them through to 130. For Lindisfarne wickets were shared between James Harrison, Angus Smith and captain Michael D’Esposito with two apiece. Lindisfarne in reply comfortably knocked off the required runs with Michael D’Esposito having an excellent double in scoring a brisk 70 and in doing so steered his team to a 6 wicket victory.
Match 2: Hutt International Boys’ School v Christchurch Boys’ High School

Hutt International BS won the toss and decided to put Christchurch BHS. This decision was vindicated when they secured a wicket in the first over, however, the rest of the innings was dominated by Christchurch BHS who accumulated 233/6 in their 40 overs. The centrepiece of their batting was an aggressive 80 by James Cannan who in partnership with Harry Miller added 105 for the fifth wicket. Other useful contributions came from David Wakefield, Angus Cameron and Tom Gore. Kieran McComb and Blake Hawes shared the wickets. Hutt International BS responded very positively but three run outs and the loss of wickets at crucial stages in their chase saw them dismissed for a creditable 181 in the 39th over. The best of their batsmen were Brett Johnson, Kieran McComb and Olly McIntryre. For Christchurch BHS Nick Tilley captured three wickets and Dave Wakefield and Angus Philpott secured two each.
