DAY THREE – WEDNESDAY 17 DECEMBER, 2008

POOL A

Burnside High School v Wellington Girls’ College

Wellington put Burnside into bat and had them 3/28, however, they hadn’t managed to remove captain and opener Francis Mackay. She was able to build major partnerships around Katie Edwards and Kimberley Rattray to ensure her team reached an imposing 210/9. Francis dominated the innings scoring a magnificent 153 – the highest ever individual score in the fifteen year history of the finals. Despite this Wellington bowled tidily, conceding few wides, and Wheturangi Charteris and Stephanie Bremner each captured three wickets. Burnside’s total proved too big for Wellington who was dismissed for 97 with captain and opener Rachel Chin contributing 20. Best of the Burnside bowling attack were Jessica Hastings and Ella Falkner.

Summary:

Burnside High School                        210/9  [Frances Mackay 153]

Wellington Girls’ College                  97        [Rachel Chin 20]

[Jessica Hastings 2/22, Ella Falkner 3/21]

Result:           Win to BurnsideHigh School by 113 runs

Epsom Girls’ Grammar School v HavelockNorthHigh School

This was a close encounter befitting a match that determined the final placings in pool A. A win to Epsom and they were in the finals, a win to Havelock North and it would depend on a runs v wickets differential which would have also included Burnside. However, with eight balls to spare Epsom were able to creep passed Havelock North’s tally thanks to an intelligent knock from captain Lucille Matthews who guided her team to victory with 42 not out. Chasing Havelock North’s total of 99, of which captain Amy Foster scored 33, Epsom got through to 101/7 in the 39th over. Bowling for Epsom Roseanne Cox bowled very tightly to take 4/3 and Monica Stone secured 3/20. For Havelock North Amy Foster took two and Olivia Gregory three wickets.

Summary:

Havelock North High School            99        [Amy Foster 33]

[Roseanne Cox 4/3, Monica Stone 3/20]

New Plymouth Girls’ High School v Waikato Diocesan School

For the first time in several finals tournaments New Plymouth, who were asked to bat first, were under intense pressure. At 4/4 their innings was precarious, but Kate Broadmore was still there, and she was still their at the end of their innings having seen ten partners come and go and the total edge its way to 113 all out in the 37th over. She compiled a very patient 58 not out which gave her team a total to bowl at. The wickets were shared between the Waikato bowlers with Katie Hodge, Hannah Beatson, Sunita McPhee and Alice Kay taking nine of the ten wickets to fall. Fired up by her batting Kate Broadmore then took the new ball with Victoria Hill and in a devastating opening spell of eleven overs of medium pace swing bowling between them knocked over Waikato for 18. Both had outstanding figures of 5/5 and 4/13 respectively.
