Some of the top young cricket players from around the country will meet next week for the prestigious Gillette Cup National Secondary School Boys’ Cricket Championship.
The tournament will be held at the New Zealand Cricket High Performance Centre at Lincoln University from 9-13 December.
It will be the 24th consecutive national finals tournament with over 200 schools nationwide entering the 2013 competition. The six schools competing in this year’s finals tournament won the preliminary rounds in their respective regions over recent months.
Among the 2013 finalists are two southern colleges that featured in the 2012 championship - Otago Boys’ and Christchurch Boys, who were overall winners last year with a victory over Kings College.
Auckland’s Mount Albert Grammar, Scots College from Wellington and Central Districts’ Lindisfarne College are all making debut appearances in this year’s tournament. Whangarei Boys’ make up the final spot seeking out a second championship win last seen in 1994.
The Gillette Cup has become synonymous with secondary school boys cricket and the development of future players. It is one of the longest running competitions in secondary school sport. Over 60 first class players have come through the tournament, with Kane Williamson and Tim Southee being two of the more recent graduates into the BLACKCAPS.
The competition will unfold over five days with the six finalists playing each other once in a round-robin format.
