Auckland Grammar School was looking to finish undefeated at the 2016 NZCT Junior Secondary School Boys’ finals, having secured the championship with a match to spare.
But a well-performed Hutt International unit had something to say about that on the last day of impressive action in Palmerston North.
Grammar won the toss and elected to bat first in a match reduced to 20 overs per side, due to poor weather in the morning.
Openers Ollie White and Ritapraj Gill got Auckland Grammar off to a great start.
White contributed 40 and Gill top-scored today with 49.
However, some tight bowling by Charlie Wilson (3/22) and Kahurangi Gray (2/23) saw Hutt International limit Grammar to 126/8 in their 20 overs.
It was backed up by lively and committed fielding.
Hutt International had a very good middle order performance in their run chase.
Key contributions from Gerrard Green (28 runs) and Liam Ferrier (27 runs) saw Hutt cause an upset three-wicket win.
The win ensured Hutt finished the tournament in third place.
Despite the loss, Auckland Grammar also had plenty to celebrate after a strong 2016 NZCT Boys’ tournament.
