Round One

Points after Day One: Heaton Intermediate 2, Tauranga Intermediate 2, Balmacewen Intermediate 2, St Matthews Collegiate 0, Tawa Intermediate 0, Remuera Intermediate 0

Saint Matthew’s Collegiate 81-8 (S Booth 12, C Hand 3-16, M Kumar 2-10) lost to Balmacewen Intermediate 82-4 (M Wilson-Gakkagher 21, C Hand 18*, I Bartlett 2-4), Manawaroa Park #A1

Balmacewen Intermediate are no stranger to the ANZ Junior Shield tournament having competed in it for the last four years. Having won the toss, they decided to let St Matts, a relatively new team to this competition bat first. After a fine innings from opener Sally Booth 12 and Captain India Bartlett 10, St Matt’s were slowed by Megha Kumar 2-10 and dismissed for 81. Opener Caitlin Hand started and finished Balmacewen’s innings remaining unbeaten on 18 and was ably supported by Molly Wilson-Gallagher who scored a handy 21 runs. St Matthew’s India Bartlett picked up two handy wickets, unfortunately wasn’t enough as Balmacewen sailed through to 82 from 10 overs for the victory.

Heaton Intermediate 146-4 (I Cameron 52*) beat Remurea Intermediate 33 all out (C Hartland 3-14, A Danholt 2-7), Manawaroa Park #A5

Heaton were looking to retain the ANZ Junior Shield and have made a strong start setting Remuera Intermediate a big target to chase after posting 146 in their 20 overs. Heaton showed their strength with both bat and ball. Heaton opener Isla Cameron 52* anchored the inning allowing others to attack around her. Ava Danholt showed off her exciting cricketing talents when Remuera started their reply claiming two wickets for seven runs, while teammate Ciara Hartland asserted her dominance taking 3-14. Remuera struggled to put substantial partnerships together and couldn’t keep up with the rising run rate eventually losing by 113 runs.

Tawa Intermediate School 107-7 (L Campbell 21, B Meroiti 21, M Graham 2-13) lost to Tauranga Intermediate School 108-3 off 18 overs (M Keane 33, S Macken 29), Manawaroa Park #A2

Finger nails were well chewed during this action packed affair. Tauranga Intermediate won the toss and inserted Tawa Intermediate with both schools seeking a victory to launch their hunt for the tournament victory on the right foot. Tight bowling and excellent fielding resulted in 4 out of seven dismissals coming the way of run outs. Lily Campbell 23 and Baylee Meroiti 21 were the only contributors in the first innings. Tawa hung in the game through the Tauranga innings but never quite had enough on the board. Tauranga’s openers put them in a comfortable position from the outset, with Mikyla Keane making 33 and Sophie Maken 29, led Tauranga to their first victory of the tournament, reaching 108 with two overs to spare.
