England fought back to reclaim the initiative on day three of the first Test with India at Nagpur.
India ended on 322-9, still trailing England by 71 runs after Matthew Hoggard generated an Indian collapse with a fine display of swing bowling.
At one stage India was 190-7 but an eighth-wicket stand of 128 between Mohammad Kaif and Anil Kumble avoided humiliation for the home team.
After overnight rain had provided perfect conditions for swing bowling, Hoggard responded by trapping Rahul Dravid leg before wicket with a superb delivery. Soon after, he gained Wasim Jaffer and VVS Laxman with successive balls.
Irfan Pathan then provided the slips with a catch and in eight overs, Hoggard had figures of 4-6.
Spinner Monty Panesar added to the haul when trapping Sachin Tendulkar leg before wicket for his first Test wicket.
India lost five wickets in 21 overs and Hoggard finished the day with 5-57.
Kaif fought a tradesman-like defence and was dropped twice, but he also took his opportunities whenever they arose.
Kumble provided fine support and was able to achieve only his fourth half-century in 104 Tests. He was dismissed for 58, caught at first slip off Steve Harmison's bowling.
Kaif followed him when he was bowled by Panesar for 91, a superb delivery that offered England great hope that a reasonable second innings could leave India facing a difficult target on the last day.
