Mills leads Firebirds chase

Stu Mills hit a career best 171 as State Wellington Firebirds surpassed State Canterbury Wizards' massive first-innings total at QEII Park, Christchurch.

Mills’ knock, his maiden first-class hundred, set up an unlikely first-innings win for the Firebirds after they chased down Canterbury’s 613.

The wicketkeeper received assistance from Grant Elliott, who made 101 in a record 184 sixth-wicket stand.

Chris Nevin then carried the baton, making 98 in another century stand with Mills.

Duwayne Bowden (31 not out) and Iain O’Brien (15 not out) completed the run chase, reaching 614 for eight with three overs to spare.

New Zealand Under-19 bowler Hamish Bennett was the pick of the Cantebrury attack with four for 99 from 33 of Canterbury's 219.5 overs.
