MILO CUP AND SHIELD FINALS – DAY 1

 

The MILO Cup and Shield finals kicked off in beautiful conditions at Ongley and Manawaroa Parks in Palmerston North today.

 

MILO Cup

Christchurch South Intermediate School versus Raroa Normal Intermediate School

Raroa Normal Intermediate School 125/7 – Mike Gardiner 41, Jack Leslie 3/28, Keegan Hunter 2/9 defeated Christchurch South Intermediate School 58 all out – Calvin Harrison 5-27, Dylan Wood 2-8, Oli Powdrell 2-8 by 67 runs.

Returning finalists Raroa Normal Intermediate School won the toss and decided to bat on a flat pitch at Manawaroa Park. Bailen Thatcher bowled a fiery opening spell but Raroa opener Mike Gardiner showed great composure early on and compiled a terrific 41.

Gardiner struggled to find support from the middle order and Raroa were left teetering at 94 for six. The Raroa lower order wagged and managed to get to 125 for seven from their 35 overs.

Jack Leslie and Keegan Hunter bowled tidy spells picking up 3/28 and 2/9 respectively.

Raroa Normal Intermediate took the momentum into the second innings and soon had Christchurch South Intermediate on the ropes. Dylan Wood took two wickets in consecutive deliveries in only the second over to leave Christchurch South teetering on 1/2.

Christchurch South Intermediate could not get anything going and were dismissed in the 22nd over for 58.

 

Berkley Normal Middle School versus Waihi School

Berkley Normal Middle School 137 all out – Chris Swanson 43, Reed Fisher 25, Charles Darling 5-17, Alastair Harvey 2-16, Jonny Fitzpatrick 2-43 lost to Waihi School 140/7 – Lawrence Darling 56, Charles Darling 33, Chris Swanson 3-26, Sam Frengley 2-19 by 3 wickets.

Waihi School won the toss and decided to make the most of a fresh wicket by bowling first. Berkley started very well and Captain Chris Swanson and Reed Fisher combined well for a 53 run stand for the second wicket.

When Swanson, 43, was dismissed with the score at 96 for 3, Berkley looked set for a big total. However, the middle and lower orders collapsed and Berkley were dismissed for 137 in the 34th over.

Opening bowlers William Harvey and Jonny Fitzpatrick bowled tidy spells picking up two wickets each however, the star of the show was leg spin bowler Charles Darling with 5-17.

In reply Waihi School lost a couple of early wickets. Cousins Charles and Lawrence Darling came together with the score at 15/2 and together they put on 89 for the third wicket. Lawrence Darling was the aggressor, making a fantastic 56.

Charles Darling anchored the innings for Waihi and when he was dismissed for 33 his side looked a little nervous.

A supportive crowd at Manawaroa Park witnessed a tense finish with the game going down to the second to last ball when Rupert Tudehope clubbed a boundary passed short fine leg to put Waihi School into the final.

 

In tomorrow’s final Raroa Normal Intermediate face Waihi School and Christchurch South Intermediate take on Berkley Normal Middle School for 3rd and 4th place.

Tawa Intermediate versus Waimea Intermediate

Waimea Intermediate 40 all out –Laura Gemmell 3-14,Jess Kerr2-7 lost to Tawa Intermediate 42/2 – Jess Kerr 20* Courtney Brown 2/18 by eight wickets.

Tawa Intermediate got off to a great start on the opening day of the MILO Shield Tournament. Winning the toss they put Waimea into bat and never looked back.

A great opening bowling partnership from Phoenix Williams and Laura Gemmell saw early wickets fall. Laura Gemmell bowled nice straight lines knocking over the stumps of three batsmen to finish with outstanding figures of three for 14 off her five overs.

Other wicket takers were Jess Kerr with two in her one over and Williams and Katie Blair picking up a wicket each.

Waimea got through to 40 but with some exceptional fielding – 3 run outs –and regular wickets falling they were bowled out in the 11th over.

Defending their runs Courtney Brown bowled tidy line and lengths and picked up Waimea’s first wicket early on with Tawa Intermediate on 10. This brought Jess Kerr to the crease who showed great intent to score from ball one working the singles and punishing the bad balls to the boundary.

Tawa Intermediate cruised through to the total in the 11th over with Jess Kerr the stand out batter finishing on 20 not out. Courtney Brown finishing with very tidy figures of 2 for 18 off 4 overs.

 

Berkley Normal Middle School versus Heaton Normal Intermediate

Berkley Normal Intermediate  87 all out –Issy Coombes 25, Tessa Hartland 3-6, Briar McKenzie 3-10,Ruby Beresford 3-20 lost to Heaton Normal Intermediate 88/2 by 8 wickets.

Batting first Berkley Normal Middle School got off to a good start with 27 being put on the board before losing their first wicket. Captain Issy Coombes lead the way with a great knock of 25.

After getting through to 59/2 pressure bowling from Heaton caused a middle order collapse. The success from bowling straight lines showed with Heaton getting eight batsmen out bowled.

Outstanding bowling from Tessa Hartland, Briar McKenzie and Ruby Beresford saw them picking up three wickets each and restricting Berkley to 87.

Chasing 88 to win Heaton also got off to a good start with an opening stand of 30. A third wicket partnership of 43 between Kate van Beurten and Tessa Hartland saw Heaton to coast through to the required runs with eight wickets in hand.

Playing on grass wickets for the first time Berkley struggled with their lines and 31 runs came through wides.

Tayla Christensen and Pearl Scobie bowled well picking up a wicket each.

 

In tomorrows final defending champs Tawa Intermediate take on Heaton Normal Intermediate and Berkley Normal Intermediate play Waimea Intermediate for 3rd/4th place.
