Day two of the Men’s National Club Champs saw Takapuna send a message to the rest of the competition by amassing a massive 388 in just 45 overs. Unfortunately rain interrupted the game and the match was abandoned.
Rain affected all three of the games, with only the game between St Albans and Otumoetai Cadets having enough time to find a result. Despite St Alban’s winning by 11 runs, they didn’t receive any points for the victory due to the other two games being washed out.
Eastern Suburbs had looked like they were heading to victory against Taieri, until the weather also thwarted any chance of an outcome.
The individual performance of the day came from Takapuna’s Brad Cachopa who blitzed an incredible 150 off just 64 balls.
St Albans v Otumoetai Cadets
St Albans remain undefeated, after beating Otumoetai Cadets by 11 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method.
Thanks to 75 from Jono Boult, the Cadets finished their 50 overs at 191 for nine. It was a respectable total considering the disappointing start they originally got off to.
St Albans weren’t convincing chasing down the target and things were poised nicely with the Christchurch team at 102 for four. Sadly the rain interrupted and St Albans were awarded the victory, with the adjusted target seeing them home by 11 runs.
Despite the win, no points will be allocated to St Albans, as the other two games were abandoned and all games must be competed for teams to pick up points.
Eastern Suburbs v Taieri
After a solid start to their innings, Taieri’s middle and lower-order fell apart in the latter stages and left them with a total of 171 after 48 overs.
Eastern Suburbs looked like they were cruising to victory, when their chase was cut short at 84 without loss.
Rain intervened and play was called off for the day, leaving Eastern to think what could have been.
Takapuna v United
Takapuna may have come away empty handed from their games against United, but they sure put on a display while the weather was fine.
The home side put on a staggering total of 388 during the first innings, including a scintillating knock of 150 off 64 balls from Brad Cachopa, including 12 sixes. Six of their 11 batsmen cleared the rope during the innings.
United were struggling at 99 for six when rain brought things to a halt. Takapuna will feel they deserved the points from their effort today, but will look to carry their momentum through to their game against St Albans tomorrow.
