Today, December 5 is International Volunteers day. Volunteers play an important role in the growth of cricket at all levels and growing and sustaining the game remains a key priority under New Zealand Cricket’s strategic plan – Pushing Beyond Boundaries (2007/11).
As we celebrate International Volunteers day, New Zealand Cricket would like to acknowledge the exceptional work of coaches, umpires, scorers and all the other volunteers at the grass-roots level.
We applaud the tireless work that volunteers put into the game and we are thrilled that we have trained 14,325 coaches since the inception of the Development Programme in 1999. A large number of these are mums and dads. This is in addition to all the umpires, scorers, and other volunteers in New Zealand.
New Zealand Cricket launched its Volunteers Strategy in December 2007. This included the inaugural Development Awards, which began in season 2007/08 where individuals and clubs are awarded for the initiatives they put in place for growing the game in their community.
The 5 winners as well as the Sir Jack Newman winner were invited to attend the New Zealand Cricket awards dinner in Auckland in November 2008.
As cricket continues to grow, we urge more cricket followers to get involved with the game.
Again, a big thanks to all our volunteers.
