NZA leave for Sri Lanka

The New Zealand A tour of Sri Lanka will give fringe BLACKCAP players the chance to impress selectors, says co-coach Vaughn Johnson.

The -led side leaves New Zealand shores next Tuesday for a tour that will last six week and involve a one-day tri-series with Sri Lanka and South Africa and three four-day matches against the hosts.

Johnson says the tour will be valuable for players on the fringes of the BLACKCAPS.

“It will give the guys the opportunity to force their way into BLACKCAPS selection and also give those that are not incumbent one day players the chance to impress,” he says.

Johnson says all the players have been involved in tours before, but six weeks in Sri Lanka is a challenge in itself.

“But with the amount of cricket we are playing, I think the time will go pretty quickly,” he says.

The NZA squad is: Peter Fulton (captain), James Franklin, Chris Harris, Gareth Hopkins, Jamie How, James Marshall, Bruce Martin, Chris Martin, Iain O’Brien, Michael Papps, Jeetan Patel, Jesse Ryder, Mathew Sinclair, Daryl Tuffey
