Umpiring is arguably the most unforgiving aspect of cricket. Not only is it extremely tough to master, you also are under a huge amount of pressure to get your decisions right from players, coaches and supporters.
Kannan Jagannathan knows the pressures well, after coming through the umpiring ranks in Otago.
Not only does Jagannathan take up every opportunity get out in the middle himself, he also is open to giving less experienced umpires a helping hand.
“His willingness to make himself available to instruct prospective new members is exceptional. He is well prepared for any instruction session and conducts the session regardless of how many turn up. He relates very well to prospective new umpires whether they are school students or more mature individuals,” stated Dunedin Cricket Association Chairman, George Morris.
“Whatever he does he does not expect immediate results. He is in umpiring because it involves him in a game he loves. He is keen to do whatever he can to help others enjoy the game. Kannan is the type of individual that every association wished they had.”
Jagannathan has big goals in umpiring, with hopes to move up the umpiring ranks over the next few years. Tim O’Sullivan, Otago Cricket Manger of Operations, believes with some hard work Kannan can progress up the ranks in the next few seasons.
“His abilities as an aspiring umpire will see him climb the NZC umpiring ranks in the coming seasons. We can all see his progression as a professional season by season. His personal goals might be high and they should be,” claimed Tim O’Sullivan,
“Kannan makes himself available for umpiring at all levels, training umpires, volunteering around big domestic games either for the association or as an official’s assistant; third/fourth umpire for the limited over games and enjoys the opportunity to learn and speak with the top-level umpires. “
A huge amount of umpiring is being consistent and gaining respect from the players, something O’Sullivan believes Jagannathan does exceptionally.
“He has huge respect from all players for his communication abilities and considered discussion making.”
Kannan Jagannathan is the recipient of the 2015-16 Community Cricket Official of the Year Award. The award acknowledges an official who has been responsible for officiating community cricket and has shown outstanding passion and commitment during the season.
