Otago Boys’ High School today claimed the New Zealand Community Trust Junior Boys’ Cup, beating Hamilton Boys’ High School by 52 runs in the final at Manawaroa Park in Palmerston North.
A fine performance in the Cup match from Captain Taine Bayly (74 off 48) set up the triumph for Otago Boys, leading them to an imposing total of 136. In reply Hamilton Boys’ gave up too many wickets early and was in the end restricted to 74 for eight.
The southerners booked their place in the final with a victory over Hutt International Boys’ College in the Pool B Twenty20 match in the morning. That got them a meeting with Pool A’s Hamilton Boys’, who had convincingly beaten New Plymouth in their third round match.
Rounding off the podium was Christchurch Boys’ High School, who narrowly toppled Tauranga Boys’ College. Sacred Heart College wrapped up fifth ahead of Napier Boy’s High School, while New Plymouth Boys’ High School finished with a win over Hutt International.
While Bayly’s 74 in the final was the top score from the day, the top overall individual accolade went to Sacred Heart’s Dale Phillips, who was announced as the Player of the Tournament. Phillips top scored with 142 runs from his four matches at an average of 47.33.
