Two South Island teams lead their respective pools following the first completed day of the NZCT Junior Boys Cup at Manawaroa Park in Palmerston North. With the two previous days having been washed out, day three saw two rescheduled Twenty20 rounds played out.
Christchurch Boys’ High School holds the slenderest of leads in Pool A, thanks to a superior net run-rate over their afternoon opponents, Hamilton Boys’ High School. Following victories for both sides in round one, they then played out a thrilling tie, with both teams making 82 with the bat. Sacred Heart was the other team to pick up a victory, triumphing over New Plymouth Boys’ High School by four runs. Christchurch Boys, Hamilton Boys and Sacred Heart all still have a chance to finish top seed.
In Pool B Otago Boys’ High School all but guaranteed themselves a place in the Trophy match tomorrow afternoon with victories over both Napier Boys’ High School and Tauranga Boys’ College. They will now face third placed Hutt International Boys’ School tomorrow morning, who will need a big win to take the top seed, while Napier too are in with a chance.
Tom Renouf of Tauranga Boys’ College picked up the highest score of the day, making a sharp 50 from 49 deliveries. There were plenty of bowling performances of note, with Christchurch Boys’ High School’s Jamie Thiele taking four for ten and Napier Boys’ High School’s Liam Galbraith snaring four for 11.
