The upshots...

Sunday’s rollicking ANZ ODI series opener in Hamilton has officially set the South african tour alight and although the BLACKCAPS were on the wrong side of a cliff hanger, there’s still plenty of positives for Kiwi fans heading into Wednesday’s second ODI in Christchurch … here’s our top six.

1 - BLACKCAPS grit

The never say die attitude instilled in the side by Brendon McCullum was once again on display at Seddon Park. The highly billed Proteas batting line-up were cruising to their target at 88-0 and then 117-1, but the BLACKCAPS refused to roll over. Williamson mixed things up, a period of four wickets in 14 balls transpired and our boys did everything but pinch and unlikely victory. Good signs!

2 - CDG

The smoking gun down the order, Colin de Grandhomme showed how valuable his all round game can be. He soaked up early pressure with the bat before carrying the BLACKCAPS to a respectable score with his trademark power hitting. He also got through his overs without too much tap and was terrific in the outfield. Looks to be up for the fight this series - an asset to have.

3 - Batting chinks?

If Hamilton proved anything - it was that our star studded world number one tourists are beatable. Their one day batting line up is formidable and features four of the top six ranked players. But like all the players they’re susceptible to pressure and their mid-innings collapse will give the BLACKCAPS bowlers some heart.

4 - Mr Fix It

What’s not to like about Mitchell ‘Slinky’ Santner? The 25-year-old continues to show composure beyond his years and is a mouth watering prospect for New Zealand Cricket’s future. He mustered 17 valuable runs down the order on Sunday, before opening up with the new ball and getting through his seven overs at just 4.7 run per over. A class act who continues to grow!

5 - Tahir tamed … for now

After a devastating five wicket bag in Auckland, the world’s number one white ball bowler Imran Tahir was brought down to earth a little in Hamilton. He was denied his customary exuberant post wicket celebration by the BLACKCAPS who even managed to take his seven overs for a run a ball. This was lead by Williamson who cut and slog swept well. Watch and learn fellow batsmen!

6 - A cracking series

Two classy sides playing good cricket with many of the world’s best on both sides. The series is set up well and it’s now the BLACKCAPS turn to get on the board. Christchurch should provide more pace and bounce which should make for a high scoring contest. GAME ON!
