There’s more to coaching than just technique and the newest Level II Coaching modules encompass everything a modern day coach needs.
The newest modules are being trialled at Canterbury Cricket and at this stage the skills specific modules have been changed. It is anticipated that the generic coaching modules will be added to the programme before the end of the year. The generic coaching modules will cover aspects of management, leadership, planning and communication.
“Mental strategies within cricket are very important. We asked some level three coaches what they found most challenging about their coaching. They said that concentration issues and mental strategies were the main concern,” Nigel Marsh, the Canterbury Cricket CoachForce Manager said. “We also talked with players and they said they needed to improve their concentration levels too.
“Technique is important, but we need to incorporate strategies and skills to help with the mental strategies of the game.”
Canterbury Cricket is the first major Association to trial the new modules which take approximately 34-35 hours to complete. The Association ran the modules during May and June. Marsh said that the new modules have been received well. “The generic coaching modules will have more focus on current coaching approaches and the methodology behind coaching. It’s all about asking questions and finding out what the athletes needs are instead of telling them what to do. There is significant research to prove that this approach enhances the learning process.”
Side note: Canterbury Cricket is committed to developing coaches to their full potential. Part of the Coach Development programme is to run Coaches Workshops. The next workshop will be held on 26 July and will be hosted by Canterbury Wizards’ coach Bob Carter. The focus for this workshop will be batting. There is no charge and if you are interested in being involved email Nigel Marsh on nigel@canterburycricket.org.nz
